Writing for the Web

Being the editor of a Web site can be a fun, interesting and rewarding but, at the same time, fairly demanding job. It’s not simply a case of displaying information; it requires a great deal of mental activity and hard work. Here are a few suggestions to help you to create a good, content-rich Web site that will make visitors return day after day.

One of the most important things to think about is to always customize the information to suit your target group. Who is going to read what you write? What knowledge do these people have? How will you formulate your ideas so that these people can understand them? For example, there is a great deal of difference between writing information directed towards children and writing information directed towards adults. You must establish your target group. Start by finding out how people surf the Internet and how you can capture your readers' interest in a simple, but effective way.

Your text must draw your readers so that they are tempted to return to your Web site for more information at a later date. A Web site that is updated regularly with new information makes visitors want to come back. A Web site with interactive features can also attract readers and make them want to return.
It is important to write text that is easy to read on the screen; it should be short and effective, but still allow your message to get through. By formatting the text in a suitable way, you will reach your visitors more successfully. It is important to always be credible and consistent in what you write – make the visitors feel secure.

Use a check list to ensure you do not miss vital details.
