SMARTiD enables all NHS staff to sign on once to their local network, national applications and VPN Client, using the NPfIT provided Smart Cards. This is achieved without any modification to the card itself, significantly reducing management costs and the burden on IT staff
How it works
The first time an end-user logs in with the Smart Card, SMARTiD enrols the person by prompting for a domain username and password.
These details are encrypted and stored in the local directory against the user object, together with a unique identifier that matches the Smart Card with the end-user.
The end-user is then logged on to both the local network and the national applications.
The Smart Card can also be used in conjunction with Cisco VPN for remote access removing the need for a separate authentication service when implementing a remote access solution, One Card does the job.
